Most of the general public will know nothing about this muscle and what it does. Yet many hip and butt problems e.g. (hip bursitis) problems are due to G.M. weakness.
Gluteus medius is an important muscle in walking, running and single leg weight-bearing because it prevents the opposite side of the pelvis from dropping during walking, running and single leg weight-bearing.When a limb is taken off the ground the pelvis on the opposite side will tend to drop through loss of support ...
When this muscle is weak the body starts to adapt as its looking for other muscles to aid walking.
It does this by letting the foot rotate outwards or in some case inwards.
Long term by the body doing this then it sets off a chain reaction of problems.
Injuries that can develop from a weak Glut Medius. Iliotibial Band Syndrome.
Medial Knee Pain, Lower Back Pain, Shin splints and Plantar Fasciitis.
It’s not all doom and gloom as corrective exercises can really help.
The first thing to do if you suspect that you might have glute med. weakness is to have it confirmed by a health professional ie physio.
